Crystal Singing Bowls

by Sean

Crystal singing bowls have long been an important an important healing tool. By using sound to align one’s energies, they effectively unify both the mind and the physical body, allowing both to resonate at frequencies that promote health and wellness. It is simply another way to heal with crystals.

Using sound as a means of healing is nothing new in the world, although it can seem it to people who are accustomed to more traditional healing modalities. If you tend to go to your doctor and present a few symptoms – your head hurts, you feel low, your appetite is not what it used to be – they will tend to address the symptoms, as opposed to a more whole person approach. And more likely than not, you’ll get medications that address the symptoms while neglecting the underlying stressors that might, in fact, be quite broad and deep-rooted.

Sound healing comes from a different perspective. If you can, picture yourself as little more than a resonating energy field. You don’t have to let go of your idea of yourself as a dense physical body. Just imagine energy – light or sound, perhaps – composing you.

If that’s true – and plenty of people believe it is – then working light or color or sound therapy can be an excellent way of interacting with and addressing the whole person.

That’s where a crystal singing bowl enters the picture. Basically, these bowls – which can be made of clear quartz – create a pure wave form that is called a sine wave. This particular form can resonate and pass through physical objects.  But as it passes through, it creates what you might think of as echoes – small resonances. It is almost as if your body is filled with bells – literally encoded into your DNA, streaming through your blood, suspended from your bones – and as these bells ring, they create a harmonious song that literally transports you. It heals you.

Essentially, you can focus your energy on a particular issue or block and allow the notes to help resolve the issue.  This can be facilitated by working with a healer – a qualified sound healer or therapist who has some familiarity with the bowls and how they work.

Many crystal singing bowls come in sets of seven that are aligned with the chakras – bands of light and energy that enfold and resonate around our physical bodies.  When the bowls are played, the corresponding chakra responds and inspires a change or shift in one’s consciousness.

Clear quartz relates to this process large because of its composition, but also because of its color. The sound vibration of clear quartz is more or less white – which is the colors of the rainbow brought together in a single stream of light. This reflects a particular unity and harmony that its conducive to healing sound. Clear quartz actually restores the balance of the many energies that compose us, and singing bowls facilitate this process.

While it can seem like we are simply stirring bowls and creating soft tones of music that swell and fade and literally hang in the air, we are actually working at a cellular level.

Some people confuse the crystal singing bowl with Tibetan singing bowls. The two are actually distinct and unique, though they work in similar ways. A Tibetan singing bowl actually creates a more complex sound of tones and harmonics. Some people report that the Tibetan bowls have a softer, fuller sound while crystal singing bowls are more intense.

If you haven’t tried them, you don’t need to buy your own. There are many CDs made with crystal singing bowls, including compilations that you can use to sample the many different approaches that one can take to this art. You can also seek out local healers – many are willing to work with you even if you are unfamiliar with the process, and some put on regular informational seminars. It is quite an experience the first time that you feel and hear the crystal singing bowl.
